September 29, 2002 – Reno, Nevada – Jon Roeser and Brad Buttrey tied for
the Lead in the Open Herd Work Preliminaries of the National Reined Cow
Horse Association World Championship Snaffle Bit Futurity with matching 222
scores.
Jon Roeser of Lemoore, California, was riding RSP Smart
Remedy, a stallion by Smart Little Lena out of Remedys Response, owned by
Clear Lake Land and Cattle Ranch, of San Jose, California. Brad Buttrey, of
Merced, California, marked his high score on Lovable Lena, a daughter of
Smart Little Lena out of Pana Sugar Chex, owned by Roseanne Sternberg of
England.
Both riders competed on Saturday and their leads held
throughout the round. The two serious challenges to their scores came on
Sunday, from Sandy Collier on Instant Paloma (an AQHA mare by SR Instant
Choice X Paloma O Lena owned by Anne Crawford-Hall of Santa Ynez,
California) and Boyd Rice on his paint gelding, Deltas Color (Color Me Smart
X Delta Flyers Bueno). Although Collier and Rice came close, they would
have to settle for scores of 221.5 and a tie for third in the round.
The action continues at the World Championship Snaffle
Bit Futurity on Monday with the first section of Open Rein Work
Preliminaries slated to begin at 8 am.
The herd work, rein work and cow work scores combined
will advance the top riders to the Open Finals, to be held Sunday, October
6. The winner will earn $100,000.
